The inaugural release for Nairobi label From Cool Waters is a feverish amalgam of traditional Kenyan currents and moody, minimalist electronics. Emerging from the confluence of three special talents – Nairobi-based Nyege Nyege collaborator and experimental drummer Sven Kacirek, esteemed 83-year-old folk artist Ogoya Nengo and dodo singer/songwriter and luthier Olith Ratego – PALAGOMA channels an electroacoustic synergy unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.
The Remix EP contains remixes by: Kasimyn, KMRU, Lena Willikens and [MONRHEA].
Kasimyn is an Indonesian electronic music producer, DJ and sound artist, and one half of the acclaimed duo Gabber Modus Operandi. Based in Bali, his work combines contemporary club music with Indonesian musical traditions, including gamelan, dangdut, funkot and jathilan.
His work has been presented at major international festivals including CTM, Nyege Nyege, Unsound, Dark Mofo and Primavera Sound. He has also collaborated with artists across music and performance, including contributing production to Björk’s 2022 album Fossora.
His solo project Hulubalang and his label Gorong Gorong Records explore experimental electronics and Indonesia’s diverse musical traditions.
KMRU is the alias of Nairobi-born, Berlin-based sound artist and producer Joseph Kamaru. Working with field recordings, found sound, ambient electronics and improvisation, he has developed a distinctive approach to experimental music rooted in close listening to his surroundings. His acclaimed releases on labels including Editions Mego, Subtext and Seil Records have established him as an important voice in contemporary experimental electronic music. He has performed internationally at venues and festivals including the Barbican, CTM, Berlin Atonal, Dekmantel and Le Guess Who?
Lena Willikens is a German DJ, producer and sound artist whose work moves between experimental electronics, industrial music, techno, no wave and global club rhythms. A longtime resident of Düsseldorf’s Salon des Amateurs, she has released music on Cómeme, Dekmantel and EM Records and has performed at major international festivals and clubs including CTM, Berghain and Nuits Sonores. She is also the host of the acclaimed Lightning Conductor radio show on NTS and collaborates with artist Sarah Szczesny on the audiovisual project Phantom Kino Ballett.
[MONRHEA] is a Nairobi-based experimental music producer, DJ, live performer and creative technologist working at the intersection of electronic music, techno, bass, African polyrhythms, creative coding and audiovisual performance. Her work combines music production, live coding, DJing and, increasingly, movement-controlled sound and immersive technologies.
Her music moves between experimental techno, bass music, hip-hop, ambient/electronic music and African polyrhythmic structures. Her productions and mixes have been described as introspective, dark and deeply exploratory, while incorporating influences from both Nairobi’s underground electronic scene and wider African musical traditions.
