The Nutcracker Sessions
I have been working on soundtracks for contemporary dance pieces for many years. In 2012, the German choreographer Antje Pfundtner asked me to provide the soundtrack for her contemporary version of the classic ‘Nutcracker’ ballet. I always found it a bit problematic to put several months of work into a performance piece that was ultimately only performed six, seven or eight times. Antje’s version of The Nutcracker was only performed four times in Hamburg and twice in Düsseldorf. That was it. So I decided to continue the work I had already put into this project to release an album. It took me a lot of time to go through the classical score, learn the melodies and then – of course – rearrange and record my interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s original version. I don’t think I’ve ever put so much time and effort into a single album project before. The record was released on Naive Records. Unfortunately, the record company went bankrupt shortly after the release and the album didn’t get much attention. However, I still think it is one of the best records I have ever recorded.
